CHAPTER SIXTEEN

ZASHA

When she felt Quannah’s hand settle on her back, she shook him off without a thought to how he would misinterpret the action. But she couldn’t allow him or anyone else to touch her.

For the first time since Marley’s black magic had initiated her transformation into a wolf, she was afraid. Not because of herself, but for everyone surrounding her.

Sister Wolf was out of control. Zasha didn’t think she’d be able to contain her for long. There was simply too much fight in her, too much will to break free.

Zasha couldn’t help but scrunch up her face as she involuntarily hunched forward, struggling to keep the animal inside.

No! she yelled within her mind. Or maybe her denial extended beyond it. It was hard to tell. Stay inside. You can’t come out now.

But like a headstrong toddler who had no concept of the word no, her wolf didn’t care to listen.

Zasha registered that the others were speaking to her, but she couldn’t focus on their words. She was busy wrangling a rabid beast.

“Not. Now.” This time, she growled the words aloud, she was sure of it.

Sister Wolf took a running start, then slammed against her insides.

Zasha gasped at the impact, though she hadn’t been convinced any of the sensations were real beyond her imagination until that moment.

When Sister Wolf knocked into her again, Zasha fell to her knees, barely slapping the grass beneath them before someone picked her up and held her weight.

Zasha gritted her teeth and steeled herself for another hit, but her resistance couldn’t last. “What do you want?” she asked her wolf between gritted teeth, uncaring that she had an audience to her current insanity.

Out! came the immediate response, mired in impatience and a rampant fury that was all beast that had no use for reason.

She began to deny her wolf what it wanted … then decided her resistance was futile.

Zasha was strong as only someone who’d been raised to fight her entire life could be. But she couldn’t be distracted when the hunters arrived, fighting her own wolf, a beast she now understood was an indivisible part of her.

So when Sister Wolf banged against the confines of Zasha’s body again, she didn’t resist … and felt the transformation wash over her like liquid slipping through every part of her body, heating her entire insides.

When she opened her eyes again, she wasn’t surprised to discover herself furry and standing on four paws.

The others did look surprised, however. Even the elders, whom Zasha had never seen flustered—not even when Khristya was being blown to bits in their presence.

But Zasha’s wolf didn’t care what the others thought about her transformation. She reveled in her strength—and there was no denying it. Power pulsed through her form along with each whoosh of her heart.
